Claire Sloan, owner and investigator of Shadows of the Night Investigations and Paranormal Events retells the investigation of the tunnel.
The Victoria Tunnel in Newcastle upon Tyne, England is a preserved 19th Century wagonway. It extends under the city from the Town Moor to the Tyne. Its purpose was to transport coal from Spital Tongues (Leazes Main) Colliery to the river. It operated between 1842 and the 1860s. In 1939, the Tunnel was converted into an air raid shelter to protect thousands of Newcastle citizens during World War II.
Today, when the revelers of Newcastle are partying away, underneath lies a dark past. The three northeast witches were hung on the Town Moor at Newcastle, multiple deaths were reported in the area, and there were haunting stories told of what went on down there during World War II when Newcastle was being bombed by the Germans. It’s safe to say that there are a few lingering spirits in the Tunnel.
So, what paranormal investigator wouldn’t want to go into the Tunnel to investigate and gather evidence? Unless, of course, you are afraid of small, confined very dark spaces and being 85 feet underground.
Investigating the Tunnel
As I led my team into the darkness, George, one of the tour guides, began to give us a brief history of the location. Then we started the investigation. Not knowing what to expect when investigating a new location is always the most exciting part of the night, as every investigator knows we can never predict what’s going to happen.
As always on the Shadows of the Night events, we always put the safety of our guests first by doing protection work to reassure them when working with spirit. In fact, the most popular question asked by our guest investigators is usually: “Will anything follow us home after an investigation?”
We believe that doing a protection ritual before each investigation helps protect investigators from spirit attachments, etc. And on this investigation, starting the night off at 85 feet below ground in sheer darkness was enough to rattle even the toughest person’s nerves.
We started the investigation off with an EVP session. And we weren’t disappointed. We received amazing responses to questions asked. We even heard from a few mischievous spirits. It was safe to say we weren’t the only ones down in the tunnel!
Investigators felt intimidated during the investigation, including feeling a big, dark shadow up close to their faces as it blew ice cold blasts at them. We also smelled foul odors coming and going.
At one point, all of us were standing and looking down an empty tunnel. At this time, several investigators witnessed someone walking toward us carrying an old lantern used in the olden days. The person suddenly disappeared. How could this be? No one else was at that part of the tunnel, and we were only using the main entrance of the tunnel that night.
As we got further into the night, we heard loud banging noises that got louder and louder. Where was this coming from? At 85 feet underground in what was used as an old air raid shelter, we wouldn’t have been able to hear a bomb go off above us. When running to investigate these load banging noises, one of the guests let out an almighty scream. He was a big, tall man.
Running back up the tunnel toward him, I asked him what was wrong. After trying to calm him down for 10 minutes, he told us that a huge, dark shadow had come right in front of his face. And then all of a sudden he felt like he had been slapped in the face. No sooner had he said that when one of our females guests started crying.
By this time we had to get everyone out and calm everyone down. I asked the female guest if she was OK. She told us that it felt like something had scratched her neck repeatedly. When checking the back of her neck, we couldn’t believe it. Red scratch marks appeared on her neck!
At the end of the night, we concluded that the old Victoria Tunnel most definitely has a few bullying, mischievous spirits lingering down there.
