The other part of this story involves two Navy aviators, Lt. Murl W. Davenport of Detroit and Lt. Eddie Moriarty stationed on an aircraft carrier.
The following story appeared in the Detroit Free Press, January 2, 1944
"It develops that the fighter pilots from this particular carrier were involved in a skirmish with a flock of Zeros. Two of the American fighters and many more Zeros were shot down into the ocean.
