Strolling down a country lane, one would think is the safest thing a person can do, however for one woman it was the most dangerous. Little did she think that by accident or design, the word "duck" would have saved her life.
October 25th, 1977, Perrine, Florida
Local police did not believe the woman killed intentionally, even though it's possible the pilot of the small plane was trying to scare her. It was believed that few people had the skill to fly a plane so well that they could bump something on the ground, however there was no doubt the pilot knew he had hit someone.
The first policeman to arrive at the scene on the road bordered on both sides by cornfields said, "The whole front of her chest was cut open".
The FAA made a check for the plane at airports in the southern part of Florida and Dade County, including local airports and private strips. Eventually the plane nor the pilot was found.
Several witnesses at the scene said they had seen the plane clip the woman and then tried to hit their cars. By the time the police arrived all but one of the witnesses had left the scene.
It was not until Mid-December of that same year that the mystery lady was identified, and how she ended up decapitated.
Her name was Lucienne Nelson, 20, a Haitian citizen, living in the Bahamas who was being flown illegally by smugglers into Miami. Police believed she had been a passenger on the plane and that she accidentally walked into the propeller.
Nothing more was written about this incident, even though it did not correlate with the story told by the witnesses that the plane was seen swooping down.
So if you ever see a phantom lady walking through the cornfields with her head tucked under her arm, there's a chance it's this poor lady who went from hopeful to dead in a few seconds.
